Mask/Face Covering Policy

The Minnesota Youth Athletic Services has adopted guidance from the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) to clarify information regarding the mask/face covering requirements.

Minnesota State High School League Mask/Face Covering FAQ's

MDH Mask/Face Covering Requirements

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requires that all persons in youth and adult sports wear a mask/face covering at all times, including practices, games, or competitions (COVID-19 Sports Practice Guidance for Youth and Adults). All other individuals who attend a practice or competition are required to follow Executive Order 20-81 regarding the requirements for wearing of masks/face coverings (Face Coverings and Requirements under Executive Order 20-81).

As noted in the Stay Safe Guidance for Organized Sports, teams and athletes should be aware that organized sports are not without risk of COVID-19 transmission, and many exempt people are also at risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Teams are strongly encouraged to convey this message to athletes claiming face covering exemptions and are strongly discouraged from providing opportunities for at-risk athletes to participate in activities that pose a heightened risk of transmission.

Mask/Face Covering Exemption per MSHSL guidance

Per the MDH Guidance, people who have medical or other health conditions, disabilities, or mental health, developmental, or behavioral needs that make it difficult to tolerate wearing a mask/face covering may be exempt from wearing a mask/face covering.

Those individuals seeking a mask/face covering exemption must obtain a written, medical exemption from a licensed medical professional who is registered, licensed, certified, or otherwise statutorily (MN Statute Chapters 147 & 148) authorized by the state to provide medical treatment and is practicing within the person’s medical training and scope of practice.

MYAS/MYBA Specific Guidance on Mask/Face Covering Exemption

The written, medical exemption must be provided to the individual’s Head Coach and to the Association COVID Compliance Manager. The Head Coach must have the exemption documentation with them at all times, and must be prepared to present this medical exemption to game officials, opposing coach and/or tournament staff upon request.

It is recommended that, prior to any competition, notification of any mask/face covering exemption be made to the hosting organization in order to verify their facility requirements.

NOTE:    Facility requirements take priority over any mask/face covering exemption.
