Return to Play -
January 2021

Minnesota Youth Basketball Community,

Our 2020-2021 youth basketball season began this fall with much uncertainty. Boards and association leaders did their best to interpret the COVID-19 expectations identified by the MDH and their school districts and to create protocols for their associations to facilitate a safe season. Despite our individual best efforts, when the fall COVID spike hit Minnesota, a pause was deemed necessary. In working with the MDH, the leadership team at MYAS learned that a return to play was predicated not only on reduced COVID-19 case rates and hospitalizations, but also on a unified and consistent set of expectations and protocols to be followed by all of youth basketball in Minnesota. To come back, we would need to come together!

MYAS leadership formed the MYBA Task Force to create a Return to Participation Manual, available to all teams and associations. The goal was to outline a safe and healthy return to play strategy that would be accepted by the MDH as the path back to the court, for adoption by all Minnesota youth basketball associations and players. The task force worked with the MYAS team, under the guidance of the US Council for Athletes’ Health and at the request of the MYBA/MYAS Basketball Board of Advisors. The manual and protocols include information and tools as well as calling for consistent data reporting to the MDH and consequences for lack of compliance. We wanted to create a one-stop shop to make it as easy as possible for association leaders to follow the necessary requirements.

We all want the kids on the court and are so excited that they will have that opportunity again soon! To sustain play, it’s critical that players, coaches, families and associations all take the necessary steps to reduce COVID-19 transmission. If we come together as “one team” for Minnesota youth basketball, we can make the most of this season! It will certainly be a year that we will never forget.

Thank you for your time and dedication to youth basketball!
