Passing, shooting, dribbling – there are a lot of skills that youth basketball players need to work on to succeed on the court. Drill after drill, practice after practice – they hone their skills. But what are they really learning? Most athletes finish their competitive participation in sports when they graduate from high school. Luckily, all that time spent in the gym teaches young athletes more than a reliable 3-point shot.

Teamwork, respect and a positive mental attitude are all life skills that are learned on the court.

You Shoot, I Shoot, We Win

Basketball is a beautiful sport. Fast-paced, back-and-forth action demands players work together to drive the team to success. As some players crash the boards, others know to take a step back and wait for a pass. When everyone on the court knows their position and what to do in a given situation, good things happen.

The same is true in life. From families to careers, life is filled with moments that call on us to step up in a specific way. Basketball prepares young people for those moments.

Game Recognizes Game

No matter the level, players know the work that everyone has put in. Both teammates and opponents know the effort it takes to succeed in the sport and that creates mutual respect among competitors. Of course, teams want to show that they’re the best – but not without recognizing the talent that is across from them.

The best players want to play against the best possible competition. This stays with children as they grow and find their passions. As they enter their careers, they will already be accustomed to the work it takes to reach their goals how to identify opportunities to improve.

Positivity Breeds More Positivity

Sometimes, the game will get tough. Not every basket is going to go in. Sometimes the ball bounces just out of reach. Much like in life, not everything is going to be perfect on the court. Games will be lost. Slumps will happen. Youth basketball players must develop a positive mental attitude that will help carry them through tough times. Becoming unphased when a shot rims out will prepare players for later in life.

They won’t shy away from trying again after suffering a setback. They will understand that all they can control is their effort and as long as they keep pushing forward, eventually they will reach their goals.
