The role parents play in shaping young athletes cannot be overstated. Beyond rides to practices and games, parents model important behaviors and champion their kids’ efforts to be the best they can be. Recognizing the importance of your role as sports parents can pave the way for more great seasons.

Parents Teach Children How to Be Good Sports

Children learn by example, which makes it quite common for them to respond the way their parents do in the face of wins or losses.

For example, a parent who emphasizes positive encouragement during a sporting event can show kids how to have grace under pressure, even if they don’t get the outcome they were hoping for. Conversely, a parent who reacts poorly to a loss can discourage kids and make them feel that winning matters above all else.

Positive parenting solutions, even during a loss, may include praising your child’s effort or execution of a new skill. This helps young athletes boost confidence and learn to prioritize what matters most.

Parents Teach Children the Importance of Physical Exercise

A recent study found that 1 in 6 children are considered obese in the U.S. Obesity-related conditions include high blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes.

Studies have shown that physically fit kids are better equipped to handle life’s emotional challenges. Active kids often have stronger muscles, bones and self-esteem.

Thankfully, many children are looking for an excuse to run, jump and play, so all it takes is a positive role model to encourage this physical activity. Children who see their parents enjoying a sport, or motivating them in one, are far more likely to live an active lifestyle.

Parents Help Kids Build a Strong Work Ethic

Kids have an uncanny ability to bounce back from life’s challenges, but hard work and mental toughness don’t always follow them to adulthood. Parents can encourage kids to develop a strong work ethic now so that it sticks with them throughout their entire lives.

There are many positive parenting solutions for instilling a hard work ethic in kids. Parents can show pride in children’s accomplishments, even if they don’t have the desired outcome, all while reminding them of the hard work it took to get there. They can also help kids use the SMART goals template (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound) to achieve more in their sport.

Not all kids are naturally gifted at sports, but hard work will allow them to reach new heights. Additionally, some kids are naturally athletic but don’t develop a strong work ethic, so their skills end up fizzling out later. Parents teaching hard work through sports can bring out children’s talents in ways that last.
