About The League
The Gopher State High School League (formerly Rising Stars High School Basketball League) is a competitive winter travel basketball league for boys in grades 9–12 throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
This season, we are excited to include four weeks of Training Camp sessions for all registered players. These sessions are designed to help players develop fundamental basketball skills, improve conditioning, and prepare for the demands of league play.
Our experienced Basketball Skills Coaches will work with players in a structured, high-energy environment, focusing on individual skill development while reinforcing team concepts. Training camp clinics may be adjusted based on participation levels and coaching availability to ensure the best experience for all players.
These training camps give players the opportunity to improve their confidence, conditioning, and overall basketball IQ before the season begins, setting them up for success throughout the Gopher State High School League season.
General Info
The Gopher State High School League (formerly Rising Stars High School Basketball League) is a competitive high school travel basketball league for boys in 9th-12th grade in the Twin Cities metro area during the winter season. This league is designed for players who did not make their high school basketball team (or had previously played youth travel basketball) and want to continue playing at a high level and competing against others throughout the Twin Cities metro region.
This 2026-2027 GSHSL season will have three class levels of competition:
- Freshman Level
- Sophomore Level
- Upperclassmen Level
There are two ways to register:
- As an individual player, who is then placed on an internal Gopher State team. Please note, if you have a fully intact team and would like to play as a Gopher State team, each player will need to register individually and indicate the player is part of a group/team in the registration.
- As a fully “Intact Team” through one of the GSHSL approved community associations &/or sport organizations (see the most current list on this page).
League Info
Three Competitive Divisions:
- Freshmen Level (9th Graders Only)
- Sophomore Level (10th Graders Only)
- Upperclassmen Level (Grades 10-12)
League Game Dates:
- Jan 11, 18, 25, Feb 1, 7 (Saturday) & 15
- Game Locations: TBD – Metro Area
- This is a High School TRAVEL League
- Teams play a total of 12 League Games
- 2 games guaranteed on the dates you play
- Teams will play all six weekends
Playoff Games:
- Feb 21 & 22
- Single Game Elimination Playoffs
- Top 8 teams/division will advance to the playoffs
- The Gopher State High School Basketball League seeding committee will place teams in seeds based on results and strength of schedule.
Register
There are two ways to register:
Individual Players:
Registered players will be placed on a Gopher State team. Players can request other players, and teams will be formed by high school geographic location. Players/Teams will receive:
- 16+ Hours of Practice/Training Offered
- Uniform
- Volunteer Head Coach
- 12 Regular Season Games
- Teams may qualify for the end-of-season playoffs
- Includes officials, courts & medical on site.
Price per player is $375.
Please note: If you have a fully intact team and would like to play as a Gopher State team, each player must register individually and indicate the player is part of a group/team in the registration.
Intact Teams:
As a fully “Intact Team” through one of the GSHSL approved community associations &/or sport organizations. The registration deadline is December 15th.

Price per team is $1495.

Tournament Options
This is an optional playing opportunity. GSHSL teams are eligible for these events. Registration is not included with League fees so teams will need to register separately.
The Rec Basketball Tournament Series were created to provide valuable game experience against competitive teams from other communities to prepare for the Grade Rec state Basketball Championships on March 20-21.
