GSBL Coaches’ Corner

Rescheduling Procedures

The GSBL/MYAS Baseball Office will never cancel any league games. It is the responsibility of the HOME TEAM COACH.  The key to this procedure is COMMUNICATION with all parties involved.

  1. In the event that a field is unplayable due to weather, the HOME TEAM COACH must do the following:
  2. Notify the opposing coach AND your Umpire Assignor about the weather cancellation, in addition to reporting the cancellation to MYAS Baseball Staff (baseball@myas.org). Your Travel Director should have information relative to your Umpire Assignor. Assignor contact info is also available on our Umpire Information page in Coaches Corner.
  3. Following reporting of the cancellation, submit rescheduled game info through the Request Game Change function – available on your Games tab on your team page in Register Play. The game status for all games that are reported to the GSBL/MYAS headquarters by 3:15pm will be updated to Postponed. Otherwise the coaches will be responsible for making sure everyone is aware of the cancelation.
  4. Reschedule a game online through the Register Play system by navigating to the Games tab on your team page and clicking on the “Request Game Change” button located in the upper right of the page. All steps of the weather-related rescheduling procedure must be completed within 96 hours of a cancelled game to ensure your game will not be forfeited. If you reschedule a game and it is not reflected on your schedule online at www.myas.org within two business days of submission, please reach out to MYAS Baseball Staff (baseball@myas.org).
  5. If the MYAS does not hear from a coach or if the coach does not report the cancellation, it will be assumed that the game is on as scheduled. It is then up to the umpire to decide if the field conditions are playable. Do not assume that just because it is raining in your home community that it is raining in your opponent’s community (Note: A $50.00 fine will be assessed if a cancellation is not communicated to all parties involved which includes the opposing team, umpire assignor and league office).
  6. Games started but suspended due to weather conditions are official after 3-1/2 or 4 innings (9U-12U), 4-1/2 or 5 (13U-19U). Unofficial/suspended games will be made up from the exact point of interruption. When both coaches agree on a specific date for the completion of the game, please notify the GSBL using the “Game Change Request” button on the Games tab on your team page and contact your designated umpire association about the change in the schedule. Be precise as to what game your are trying to finish because the assignor will try to send the same umpire to finish the game whenever possible.
  7. When your game is rained out, it will appear on your schedule as a Postponement, until new game information is received and updated by MYAS Baseball Staff.
  8. All weather reschedules must be rescheduled online using the “Game Change Request” button or the league will not recognize it as a league game. Please be sure to follow all steps of the rescheduling procedure in order for your weather related game to be rescheduled. Calling just your umpire assignor to notify him of a weather related rescheduled game will not reschedule your game.

GSBL Non-Weather Related Rescheduling Procedure

If a scheduled league game is cancelled after the following dates:

  • April 13 for 9u-14u
  • May 2 for 15u
  • May 27 for 16u-19u

For a non-weather related reason, you must do the following:

  1. Submit a $25.00 non-weather related rescheduling fee to the GSBL office prior to 24 hours of the originally scheduled game.
  2. If submitting a non-weather related rescheduling fee less than 24 hours prior to the start of the scheduled game, the fee is $50.
  3. Forfeits will have a $50 fine and will not be rescheduled.
  4. Reschedule the game online using the Game Change Request feature. Your game will then be rescheduled if umpires are available on your game date and we received the rescheduling fee.

Note: Following these steps will allow you to reschedule a non-weather related game.

This procedure eliminates any unnecessary or last minute changes and “headaches” for opposing teams, umpire assignors & MYAS Baseball Staff.

2026 MYAS/Gopher State Baseball General Umpire Policies & Procedures

2026 MYAS/Gopher State Baseball General Umpire Policies & Procedures

Please contact your association umpire assignor, your visiting coach and the GSBL immediately if any of your games are cancelled because of weather. Decisions should be made by 3:45pm, on the day of the game.

Umpire No-Show Procedure
The GSBL hopes to eliminate all “no-shows,” but we must also have a policy in the event you do have a “no-show.” Both Head Coaches must agree to one of the following:

  • Give a 15-minute grace period for the umpire to show and call your designated umpire assignor if the umpire doesn’t arrive in that time.
  • Start the game with a mutually agreed upon substitute umpire. Substitute umpires will be compensated based on the number of innings they officiate (see No-Show Umpire Invoice).
  • Do not play the game; attempt to reschedule.
Note: Please communicate with the GSBL if a “no-show” occurs. Substitute umpires will be paid for their services. The head coach must submit the No-Show Umpire Invoice within 48 hours of the game date to receive payment.

Note: This umpire “no-show” policy applies to all teams.

The no-show invoice submission only applies to teams that are using MYAS/Gopher State assignors.

Continuous Batting/Free Substitution FAQ

How are lineups set?
Coaches will set their batting lineup prior to each game. The lineup must include all players that will be participating in that contest. You must always have at least 9 players in your batting order to begin a game.

Can your batting order change?
In a continuous batting order, you may not change the order that your players bat once it is set prior to the game.

What if I have a player that will be showing up late?
It is possible to place a player showing up late at the end of your lineup in the hopes that batting position is not called prior to their arrival. This is at the coach’s risk. If that player cannot be at the plate when their turn in the order is called, that player will be called Out by the umpire.

-Or-

If the team does not want to take an out for the player, they can choose to skip their spot in the batting order. This would render that player ineligible for the remainder of the game. This is only an option as long as you have 9 players in your batting order.

I have a player that has to leave the game early. Is their spot in the lineup an Out after they leave?
If your lineup remains at 9 players or more after the player has left their spot in the lineup, that batting position will not be called an Out. However, if you have a batting order of 9 players and the now absent player drops your lineup to 8 players, that vacant spot in the lineup would be called an Out each time it is due up.

If I have a player that leaves the game due to injury does their spot in the lineup become an Out?
Just as with a player leaving early, the now vacant position in your lineup will not be called an Out as long as your batting order remains at 9 players or more. Players being removed from the game due to injury or any other reason may not reenter for the remainder of the game.

What happens If my team has 9 players present and a player gets hurt or ejected?
The vacant spot in the lineup will be called an Out each turn through the order for the remainder of the game. You can finish a game with 8 players, but if your lineup drops below 8 players the game is forfeited.

What if I have a player that bats out of order?
Reference Rule 7 (NFHS Baseball Rules Book) for situations and rules regarding players batting out of order.

Can I move players field positions each inning?
Players may change positions as often as the coach wishes (excluding the pitching position).

Can players freely substitute in the pitching position?
Please review your specific league/tournament rules regarding substitution of the pitching position.

Who can I use for a Courtesy Runner?
There may be different rules on Courtesy Runners depending on the league or tournament you are participating in. Be aware of the rules you are playing by in each event prior to the start of your first game.

Note: This document is not intended to cover all situations concerning Continuous Batting and Free Substitution. The MYAS baseball staff may be adding additional items to this FAQ as situations arise during the season.

Lightning and Thunder Guidelines

comes to Lightning or Thunder disturbances. If you have not reviewed the rules on this, please take the time to do so. You can follow the link below or look on page 78 of the NFHS rule book.

Remember, the safety of your players, coaches, and fans should always come FIRST. Lightning is very dangerous, unpredictable and can be quite random as well. Knowingly risking the safety of the individuals at your field is unacceptable.

Below are the NFHS rules.

NFHS GUIDELINES ON HANDLING PRACTICES AND CONTESTS DURING LIGHTNING or THUNDER DISTURBANCES

National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)

Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC)

These guidelines provide a default policy to those responsible or sharing duties for making decisions concerning the suspension and restarting of practices and contests based on the presence of lightning or thunder. The preferred sources from which to request such a policy for your facility would include your state high school activities association and the nearest office of the National Weather Service.

Proactive Planning

  1. Assign staff to monitor local weather conditions before and during practices and contests.
  2. Develop an evacuation plan, including identification of appropriate nearby safe areas.
  3. Develop criteria for suspension and resumption of play:
  • When thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a visible lightning strike, or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend play for thirty minutes and take shelter immediately.
  • Thirty-minute rule. Once play has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard or flash of lightning is witnessed prior to resuming play.
  • Any subsequent thunder or lightning after the beginning of the 30-minute count will reset the clock and another 30-minute count should begin.
  • Review annually with all administrators, coaches and game personnel.
  • Inform student athletes of the lightning policy at start of season.

For more detailed information, refer to the “Lightning and Thunder Safety” section contained in the NFHS Sports Medicine Handbook.

GSBL All-Inclusive Playoffs

Playoff Format

  1. GSBL will form Tiers of no more than 8 teams in each playoff bracket for 2026 based on regular season performance.
  2. Tiers will be divided into multiple Sections based on geographic area, if necessary. Division Champs will be the highest seeds regardless of record.
  3. GSBL will allow for flexibility when determining where to place teams. Seeding for the GSBL playoffs will be determined based on the league standings and points accumulated as of June 30th, 2026 at 11:59pm. Any games played or reported after this date will not count toward the playoff seeding.

NOTE: If a team’s season is not completed by the final play date, each un-played game will be counted as a loss. This ensures that all teams will be seeded into the playoffs accurately by having the same number of games played. Forfeits will only be awarded when both teams agree upon the forfeit.

Seeding and playoff matchups will be available on our website by 4:00pm on July 2nd. If you feel there is a problem with the playoff matchups and/or seeding, please contact the league office. If you are a higher seeded team in the playoffs, please be prepared to schedule a Home Game the week of July 6th.

Playoff games will be scheduled using the Host Calendar & Build Schedule functions (same as regular season scheduling). Therefore, the Higher Seed/Home Team will need to add dates available to play their playoff matchup to their calendar. The Lower Seed/Away Team will need to claim a date off the Higher Seed/Home Team’s calendar. As soon as this is completed, the bracket will update scheduling details for any matchup.

Playoff Dates

July 7th – 9U-14U Playoffs Begin – Playoff Brackets posted by 4:00pm on July 2nd

July 16th – 15U, 17U & 19U Playoffs Begin – Playoff Brackets posted by 4:00pm on July 13th

Teams will be placed into Playoff Tiers based on record and any tie-breaker scenarios. All Playoff brackets will be single elimination.

Playoff Game Times

All playoff games will begin at 6:00pm unless lights are available. Games need to be finished on the night of the game.

Playoff Locations:

Games will be played at the site of the highest seed pending field availability. Because of time constraints, if the higher seeded team cannot provide a home field for the days assigned for play, the opposing team will be given the opportunity to host that particular game if they can supply a field.

Meeting Minutes

11/4/2024
Based on feedback from Association Travel Directors, here are the following topics leaders felt would be important to discuss:

  • Two-tiered AA classification system
    • High AA/Low AA – would be league-based only
  • Grade-based exception to age rules
    • 15U level only?
  • Potential formation of a 9A division
    • 9AA division has seen significant growth over past two years (35 teams in 2024 – 2nd largest age/class)
    • Interest from Princeton, polled a few surrounding communities, possible to create 9A league division in 2025
    • Likely no full build out in tournament structures in 2025 – any 9A teams would need to play 9AA in tournaments
    • Question – would your Assn support a 9A team if division was created for league and eventually tournaments?
  • Team creation within a class level
    • How do Associations form teams that are of the same age & class level, creation of even teams or one strong/one weak?
  • Tryout practices/pearls
    • Discussion about successful tryout strategies
  • Coach Development Plans – what type of strategies do Assn’s use?
  • Limit on tournaments teams can play in during a Summer?
  • Fundraising ideas

Additionally, a few topics from Gopher State Baseball Staff:

  • Initiative to coordinate regional Travel Director Meetings
  • Possible creation of a 14A division in 2026
  • Changes to Team Classification Policy
    • Increase in winning percentage threshold requiring teams to move up – from .750 to .875
    • Include GSTC or MBT finish as criteria for moving up
      • If a team finishes in the Top 4 at either, they are required to move up
    • Eliminate condition allowing a team to stay down a level
  • Possible reduction in number of league games
    • 10U-14U reduce to 14-game season
    • Bad weather in 2024 caused a number of games to go un-played
    • Is there a need for more practice time?
  • Start 13U & 14U divisions at the beginning of May, instead of mid-April?
  • Tournament data collection – Register Play system
    • GRI Index

GSBL Team Classification

  • Following the end of any GSBL Summer season, we review season standings/team records to determine teams that finished with a winning percentage of .750 and above and below .250. Teams that finished with a .750 winning percentage or above are required to move up a class level UNLESS the association/program already has a team at that level. Teams that finished with a winning percentage below .250 have the option to move down a class level.
  • Any teams that want to stay at their current class level or move class levels that do not meet the criteria above must file a petition with our office. All petitions will be reviewed and ruled upon by our GSBL Board of Advisors. We offer two time periods to submit petitions, First Round in the Fall and Second Round in the Spring. Only one petition may be filed for any team, i.e. If a petition is denied in First Round, no petition can be filed/reviewed in Second Round, we simply offer two periods for organizations to submit petitions for the upcoming GSBL Summer season. Team Classification Petition forms are available upon request from MYAS Baseball Staff.
  • Prior to ruling on petitions submitted, GSBL Staff and our BOA will host a meeting (virtual) and allow any submitting petitions a 5-minute time slot to speak directly to our BOA members to reinforce/explain their reasoning for filing a petition. Following this meeting, our BOA will rule on all petitions and those determinations will be final.

Additional Notes:

  • If a AA team finishes at .750 or above and their association already has a team at the AAA level for 2024, they do not have to petition to remain at the AA level. They may, however, move to the AAA level in 2024 if they so choose and GSBL strongly recommends doing so to help create competitive balance in GSBL.
  • If an A team finishes at .750 or above and their association already has a team at the AA and AAA level for 2024, they do not have to petition to remain at the A level. They may, however, move to the AA level in 2024 if they so choose and GSBL strongly recommends doing so to help create competitive balance in GSBL.

Levels of Play

The following terms and definitions have been comprised through the experience and research of the MYAS Baseball Staff. All teams participating in MYAS programs must be formed through a recognized, bona fide baseball association or school program (15U-19U).

  • AAA – The highest competitive level; the top team from a traveling baseball association.
  • AA – The intermediate level of play. The AA level is intended for teams from baseball associations that have already provided teams at the AAA level. AA may also (in some cases) be defined as a level for traveling teams that are not currently able to compete at the AAA level.
  • A – The developmental level of traveling baseball. The A level is often used to place teams trying to prepare for a higher level of play. See additional information for other examples of teams eligible for the A level of play.
  • Recreational – A community “In-House/Rec” level of baseball. Recreational teams consist of players that are placed on teams via a process of their home association (i.e. all players go through a draft process, random draw, etc.).

Note: All teams wishing to participate in MYAS baseball events must be derived from a recognized, bona fide baseball association or approved school program. Teams must also have the “blessing” of their home association to participate in all events they wish to enter.

The MYAS Baseball Board of Advisors reserves the right to review all team entries and place teams into appropriate divisions as necessary.

Examples of teams eligible to participate in MYAS administered “A” events:

  • Teams participating in A level traveling leagues: All teams currently participating in a GSBL or MBL “A” traveling league.
  • Recreational teams playing in A level tournaments: If a recreational team’s home association approves them to play in an A level tournament they may do so while maintaining their Recreational status. However, if that team earned a berth to an A post-season tournament such as the Gopher State Tournament of Champions, they would no longer be eligible for Recreational level tournaments such as the MYAS Rec State Championships.
